history

Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was born in Sabrosa, Vila Real district.
This was the Portuguese navigator who, in the service of Charles V, king of Spain, captained the first circumnavigation voyage, sailing to the West, across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, in search of a new path to the Indies.

In October 1520, his fleet reached an overwhelming landscape, with majestic and steep cliffs, occasionally lit by the flames of their peoples’ fires. The name was: Tierra del Fuego.

It was almost December when he started sailing in calm waters. He has arrived in the Pacific Ocean, after a tormented crossing of the Strait of Magellan.

He died without ending his journey, on April 27, 1521, on a beach on the island of Mactan, in the Philippines, hit by an arrow. But his trip, which started and ended in September, from 1519 to 1522, contributed to reaffirm that our planet is round.

Curiosity:
The name Pacific Ocean was given by magellan, because those seas are very calm.
